At some time during the school year of 1942-43, Louise Burry, a member of the Mifflinburg High School class of 1944 and a resident of Vicksburg, came to the office of the Chief School Administrator, W. E. Thomas, and discussed the idea of establishing a "Little Brown Jug" to go to the winner of each game of the major athletic event between Lewisburg High School and Mifflinburg High School. The Mifflinburg administration then contacted Harry Eckert, Lewisburg High School principal and Director of Athletics. The Lewisburg administration also liked the idea and so the "Little Brown Jug" competition was established at the beginning of the 1943-44 school year.
Miss Burry donated the "Little Brown Jug" to the participating schools, with the original still going around. The value of the Jug in dollars and cents is very limited but its value to the two schools has become significant since it is evidence of athletic supremacy over their inter-county rival. Over the long period of years, the two schools have had some epic contests trying to claim possession of the Jug.
In 1991, representatives of both schools met to establish new guidelines for winning the "Little Brown Jug". The new criteria states that all regular season varsity athletic events contested between the two schools will count towards earning points for the "Jug". If the competition is a tie, no point is awarded.
